BSAC REGIONAL COACHING CHAPTER SINGAPORE
What happened in 1998?
BS-AC Underwater World '98 and You
At the recent Underwater World '98, a proposal was made to abolish the Dive Leader grade and absorp Dive Leadership into the Advanced Diver syllabus. Dive Leadership will then be taught as a Skill Development Course. Another proposal will introduce new Instructor classes as well as change the format to becoming an Open Water Instructor (OWI). These proposals will be implemented in a gradual fashion in 1999.
A new BS-AC School
The MV Empress, a scuba diving live-on-board operation, has become the latest BS-AC School in the region. It will be a floating BS-AC School specialising in Skill Development Courses. For more information, go to their web site athttp://www.swiftech.com.sg/~vidar/
Search & Recovery Skill Development Course
Kampong Glam Dive Club (BS-AC Branch 1189) successfully organised the Search & Recovery Skill Development Course on the weekend of 14/15 November 1998. The instructors were Martin Scott and David Broadhead. What do some of the participants have to say?
... the course was very enjoyable, and much was learned.I think 5 BSAC clubs were represented on the course, and this made for an excellent atmosphere, and can only go further towards helping bring the Singapore branches closer together.
Peter Green (A616915), Dive Club 854
... it was a Skill Development Course that was intense and comprehensive throughout. We are relieved that we 'survived' all the scenarios and lots of emphasis on dive planning and dive leadership under the instruction of Sonia, Martin, and David. Thanks for your encouragements. It was an enjoyable experience for me and looking forward to more soon.

Instructor Training Course (ITC) '98 Singapore
Organised by the BS-AC Regional Coaching Chapter Singapore, ITC '98 (July/August) comprised the Club Instructor (CI) course, the Club Instructor Examinations (CIE), the Open Water Instructor (OWI) course, and the Advanced Instructor (AI) course. National Instructor Deric Ellerby, assisted by the Advanced Instructors drawn from all the Singapore BS-AC Branches and School, put the candidates through a series of lessons and tests to produce yet another fine batch of BS-AC instructors.

BS-AC Dry Suit Course
At the request of Dr Y.C. Lee, Deric Ellerby, BS-AC National Instructor, brought 2 dry-suits with him to Singapore, to conduct a dry suit course right in the tropics! It all seemed so unreal but it happened in the last week of July, 1998. Read all about it in the article published in The Decom Stop magazine September/October 1998: Dry Suit diving in the tropics?

ASIA DIVE EXPO
BS-AC possessed one of the largest stand at the Asia Dive Expo '98 (2-5 April 1998). The BS-AC presence was spearheaded by a team from UK led by Mr Deric Ellerby. Representatives from BS-AC Japan and BS-AC Korea were also present. It was another good opportunity for members of all the BS-AC Branches and the only BS-AC School in Singapore to get together and promote scuba diving the BS-AC way. The team from UK also brought along with them, news of an important development: The introduction of the BS-AC Club Diver.
